Plus Sized Success in Erotic Romance
by Madeline Iva
I ran across this video when I was getting together my offerings for Sexy Saturday Round-Up. It’s a news piece about a religious couple with five kids who saved their house from foreclosure by writing erotic romances and self publishing them.
They say in this video clip that the ‘couple’ saves their home, but she wrote the books and they said it was viral marketing so I’m not sure what his role was. (Research???)
Anyway, I noted that her 50-shades-eque first novel featured a full-figured heroine. Hmmmmm. Could that be the key to their success?
A few weeks ago I wrote about women with uber-curves a few weeks ago–by which I meant Christina Hendricks, Nigella Lawson, etc. We throw around the term curvacious a lot, and we could mean folks like Christina, or we could mean a woman much rounder. To my mind I think of these other women as full figured, rubenesque, voluptuous, or plus-sized women.
Why rubenesque? Of course some cultures really see big women as very desirable. I remember reading an article about places to vacation if you’re large figured: Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Mexico, Africa…etc. At the same time, there’s something very sexy about a guy who knows he’s hot walking around with that strong cultural imprint in his brain that reads slender = sexy, full figured = bleh, and yet below the neck, his body is having an altogether different reaction…
So today I wanted to put out some rubenesque offerings that sounded good at Ellora’s Cave. You can click on the photos to link to the book on the EC website.
For thousands of years, Keeshan has waited. A curse put him in the lamp, damning him to an eternity of pleasing the women who find it. Each time, the women enter the lamp, ensnared in a web of lust and love. And each time, just as he grows to care, the women leave.
But Aimalee is different somehow. With her, Keeshan’s desire knows no bounds—he needs to be with her, inside her, every second she’s there, like an addict who just can’t get enough. Eventually she’ll leave just like the others but until then, Keeshan plans to indulge her every sinful urge. And maybe, just maybe, she’s the key to breaking the curse.
A desperate genie, determined to ‘indulge her every sinful urge’ NICE! It seems she’s plus-sized, he loves it, and there it is. Not really emphasized in the description.
Meanwhile here’s a short story where the heroine’s insecurities plays a strong roll in what happens:
While in Vegas for her best friend’s wedding, full-figured Jayne Daux decides to live a little and indulge in her greatest fantasy—a one-night stand with an incredibly gorgeous, sexy man. Patrick Maynard fills the bill magnificently.
Patrick sets out to give Jayne a night to remember. He thinks Jayne is perfect and longs for more time to show her just how sexy she is. To make her see herself as he sees her. He relishes her ample curves, which bolsters her shaky self-image and allows her to shed her inhibitions for their one glorious night of hot, anything goes passion.
But with the dawn comes reality. Her mystery man has disappeared and Jayne quickly learns that fantasies fulfilled can easily shatter another’s future. Even if she finds him, Jayne doesn’t know if she’ll ever be able to forgive him.
This great cover caught my eye–it’s another erotic romance is by Anne Jacobsen whom people adore:
All-pro defensive end Jimmy Bronson, new to the Savannah Rebels, moved to escape memories of a disastrous marriage. A sexual Dominant who’s in no hurry to jump into another relationship, he falls in lust with an arresting female face in a magazine.
Julie Silver, the object of his obsession, happens to live in his condo building. Their connection is instantaneous and the sex is hot and wild. Quickly, they discover they share a fetish, which they decide to play out at Rebels’ Roost, the team’s exclusive BDSM club.
The perfect Master and slave ’til death do they part? Julie is not so sure. She is older than Jimmy and knows that lust comes easily when you’re young, but love requires time and compromise. Jimmy is very sure, though. Julie is perfect for him. He’s already bought her collar and a length of diamond-studded chain to lace through the rings that adorn her clit and nipples. A committed player—in sex games and life—always gets just what he wants.
I like it that it that he’s older, and while I may be a shrinking violet about club scenes in erotic romance…wow…the chain and collar thing sounded sort of…wow.
Emmaline Harris meets the perfect man at a Halloween party. After he rescues her from the unwanted attentions of another partygoer, she succumbs to his kisses and spends an evening engaged in wicked-sexy lovemaking. Sure she’s just a one-night stand, she tries to exit gracefully, but soon find she needs Dylan’s special skills when her world is turned upside down by a blood-drinking killer and his gang who target her for their next meal.
Dylan O’Hara only wants a night of passion to slake his sexual needs, but finds Emmy is a full-bodied, red-blooded siren whose innocence and humor draws this Master vampire like a moth to a red-hot flame. When Emmy attracts the attention of a serial-killing vampire, Dylan vows to protect her, but he fears he’ll lose Emmy once she discovers her “Dracula” has real fangs!
I like this simple, straight forward plot. Sometimes you don’t need a double back flip twist with your erotic romance.
Finally, this heroine isn’t Rubenesque, but I happened to see the cover and it was to DIE. I could not resist posting it here along with the blurb:
Camilla is a sexual blackmailer. After a betrayal from her fiancé, she spends her days exacting revenge against men who are unfaithful. Armed with an iron resolve, her Panoptoscope and a handbag filled with instruments of castigation, she becomes a formidable adversary. Her quest for revenge has hardened her heart, but a small part of her still thirsts for passion and the heat of a man’s touch.
Hephaestus is a skilled metallurgist who hammers iron into any shape. When Camilla walks into his forge asking him to repair a pendant, flames of passion ignite between them. After Camilla receives letters that threaten to expose her, she seeks his protection as well as his love. However, in order to melt her heart, Hephaestus must resort to extreme measures to make her see that pardon, not punishment, is needed for love to grow and lust to be fulfilled.
Inside Scoop: Camilla witnesses all manner of erotic behavior, including male/male and fem-dom encounters. Her approach is very unique, even to this steampunk world!
